Panasonic’s $4 billion electric vehicle battery plant in De Soto, Kansas, is set to become the largest battery factory in the world. The plant, located at the site of the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, is expected to produce 2170 EV batteries by early 2025. The company plans to hire around 4,000 employees, with 400 already hired and a goal of reaching 1,000 by the summer. Positions range from maintenance technicians to leadership roles.
The plant’s impact is already being felt in the local economy, with educational partnerships established with universities and community colleges to train the next generation of workers. De Soto City Administrator Mike Brungardt highlighted the positive effect of the plant on surrounding businesses.
Panasonic is also attracting workers from outside the Kansas City area, with transfers from Nevada plants and team members from Japan joining the De Soto team. The city is preparing for the plant’s impact on the local economy, including increased traffic and industrial growth.
