Red Cross Opens Shelter After Apartment Fire in Independence


Following a large fire at an Independence apartment complex on East 37th Terrace that resulted in the loss of four lives, the American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Sermon Community Center to assist residents affected by the tragedy. The shelter, located at 201 N. Dodgion Avenue, is open to anyone in need of help after the fire and can be contacted at 1-800-RED-CROSS for more information.

Admission to the Red Cross shelter does not require identification or proof of residency, and services are available to all individuals regardless of race, nationality, or citizenship status. The fire, which began in a unit kitchen from an unattended pan on the stove, resulted in the loss of four lives, including two adults and two children. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

The Kansas City Fire Department responded to the fire at Independence Ridge apartments around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, with the fire department confirming the tragic loss of life later in the day. The Red Cross shelter aims to provide support and assistance for those affected by the devastating fire.
