Trump grants clemency to around 1,500 individuals accused in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

President Donald Trump issued roughly 1,500 pardons and commuted the sentences of 14 supporters involved in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. The pardons included individuals associated with the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers who were convicted of seditious conspiracy, as well as others convicted of offenses related to the events at the Capitol. This action has been criticized by many, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who called it an insult to the justice system and law enforcement officers. The attack on the Capitol was a significant moment in American history, resulting in the largest FBI investigation ever. Trump’s pardons fulfilled one of his campaign promises and were seen as an attempt to support the Jan. 6 rioters. While some low-level offenders had already been sentenced to probation, others who committed serious felonies received significant prison sentences. At the time of the pardons, about 700 defendants had not received prison sentences or had completed them, with only a fraction still behind bars. Many who were imprisoned had committed violent acts against police officers during the Capitol assault. The pardons have been viewed as an attempt by Trump to rewrite the narrative of the events of January 6 and support those involved in the attack.
