Mayor Quinton Lucas is proposing an ordinance to fund extra security services in Kansas City business districts to prevent thefts, break-ins, and vandalism incidents targeted at small businesses. The proposal would invest up to $1 million to increase the presence of off-duty deputies and officers from regional law enforcement agencies. The funds would be in addition to the regular Kansas City Police Department budget.
Businesses across the metro have been experiencing property crimes, with incidents escalating over the summer. The ordinance specifies areas for additional enforcement, including entertainment districts like 18th & Vine, Central Business Districts, and Country Club Plaza. If approved, the measure would authorize the city manager to negotiate security service agreements for the use of off-duty police officers and sheriff’s deputies.
Additionally, a new program has been rolled out in the River Market neighborhood to increase security presence during overnight hours. The program includes visible security forces patrolling the streets and providing assistance to residents and business owners. Lucas’ initiative to boost law enforcement presence follows the Back to Business Fund, which provides funding for businesses impacted by property crimes. Funding is still available through the program for eligible businesses.
