Gulf Coast prepares for unusual winter storm bringing freezing temperatures and snowfall

A historic winter storm is expected to bring rare snow and frigid temperatures to the Gulf Coast region, impacting more than 55 million people. Snowfall has already been reported in the Houston area, with up to 4 inches of snow expected in most areas and up to 6 inches in parts of Texas and Louisiana. Major airports in Houston will suspend flight operations, and Louisiana officials are urging people to stay home to prevent freezing pipes.

Snow and ice are forecasted to spread across the South, with moderate snow expected from New Orleans to the Florida Panhandle and icy conditions in Florida. The winter storm could be crippling to the Gulf Coast, where snowplows are not common. Louisiana is prepared with 400,000 pounds of salt for road treatment and a plan for possible closures.

Temperatures will be below freezing in Louisiana, with wind chills in the teens in New Orleans. Wind chills as low as minus 55 degrees are expected in parts of the Rockies, the northern Plains, and the Upper Midwest. Cold alerts are in effect for 214 million people from the Rocky Mountains to southern Texas and central Florida, with temperatures well below average. Possible cold records could be set in Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama.

In addition, freezing rain is a threat for coastal Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, while snow and heavy rain are expected to affect the Florida Peninsula later in the week. Below-zero wind chills will impact the Northeast, and several areas along the Gulf Coast will experience below-freezing temperatures for over 24 hours, raising concerns about infrastructure issues such as widespread pipe bursts.
