Family confirms American held in Afghanistan has been freed

An American detained in Afghanistan has been released in a prisoner exchange with the Taliban, according to his family. Ryan Corbett, who was wrongfully detained by the Taliban, was freed after being held for almost 3 years. In exchange, Khan Muhammad, a Taliban member serving a life sentence in California for narcoterrorism and heroin distribution, was released by Afghan authorities. The Corbett family expressed gratitude to both former President Joe Biden and current President Donald Trump for their roles in securing Ryan’s release. They also thanked the government of Qatar for their mediation efforts. While Ryan’s release is a source of joy for his family, they expressed concern for other Americans still detained in Afghanistan, including George Glezmann and Mahmoud Habibi. The Taliban had accused the three Americans of spying and preaching Christianity, which goes against Islamic law in Afghanistan. Biden has been involved in bringing back numerous detained American citizens during his tenure, including through prisoner swaps with other countries. The situation is still evolving, with updates expected. Jennifer Jett and Mushtaq Yusufzai, based in Hong Kong and Pakistan respectively, are closely monitoring the situation. Mithil Aggarwal has also contributed to the coverage.
