Senate President Ty Masterson of Kansas outlined his agenda in a rebuttal to Gov. Laura Kelly’s State of the State address. He promised to focus on reducing property taxes, streamlining government processes, enacting anti-abortion and anti-trans legislation, and supporting President Trump’s agenda. Masterson emphasized the need for bipartisan work while drawing the line against what he deemed as “radical policies” from the governor’s administration.
With expanded Republican supermajorities in both chambers, Masterson indicated that the agenda would prioritize tax relief, particularly targeting property tax reductions to ease economic pressures on residents. He also expressed support for Trump’s border security efforts and deportation of immigrants lacking permanent legal status.
Masterson highlighted Republicans’ commitment to a student-focused education system with opportunities for parents and hinted at the introduction of school vouchers. He opposed Medicaid expansion and expressed interest in reducing the frequency of abortions in the state.
Finally, Masterson criticized what he called “the extreme trans agenda” and referenced last year’s veto of a bill banning gender-affirming care. He vowed to readdress the issue in the new legislative session.
