President Joe Biden announced on Friday that he would be commuting the sentences of nearly 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses. This decision comes as part of a series of pardons and commutations Biden has granted throughout his term, making him the U.S. president with the most individual pardons and commutations. The commutations are directed at individuals serving longer sentences than they would receive under current laws, particularly targeting disparities based on the distinction between crack and powder cocaine. Biden described the action as a step towards correcting historic wrongs and providing deserving individuals the opportunity to rejoin their communities. He also stated his intention to review additional commutations and pardons in the future. Previously, Biden commuted the sentences of individuals on federal death row and granted pardons to those convicted of nonviolent crimes. However, he faced criticism for issuing a full pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, for federal gun and tax crimes in December.
