The town of Jinze, located in the western suburbs of Shanghai, is a unique blend of modern technology and ancient history. With a cluster of modern office buildings alongside a plethora of ancient bridges and structures dating back to the Song Dynasty, Jinze offers residents the chance to experience “a touchable history.” Photojournalist turned historian Er Dongqiang, who lives in Jinze, speaks of the importance of preserving the town’s ancient heritage, including well-preserved bridges and ancient houses with unique architectural styles.
In recent years, Jinze has attracted the attention of technology giant Huawei, which established an R&D center in the town due to its pristine landscape and serene environment. Er believes that by exposing young professionals to the town’s tangible cultural heritages, such as ancient bridges and temples, they can develop a deeper appreciation for traditional Chinese wisdom. As a result, Er has conducted field studies and launched a philological exhibition showcasing ancient architecture in Jinze.
An interesting discovery in his studies has been the prevalence of siluoqiang-style houses in Jinze, an architectural design that dates back over 3,000 years and has influenced neighboring countries like Japan. Er envisions a future where modern technology and traditional culture coexist harmoniously in Jinze, with the creation of a siluoqiang-style museum near the Huawei R&D center. By bridging the gap between technology and tradition, Er hopes to nurture the modern mind with ancient Chinese wisdom and promote sustainable growth in Jinze. With its rich history and commitment to preserving cultural heritage, Jinze continues to serve as a model for integrated eco-green development in the Yangtze River Delta region.
