Festival Celebrates Innovative Technology in Artistic Works (But Raises Concerns About Artificial Intelligence)

Blind Runner, a powerful play currently showing at St. Ann’s Warehouse as part of Under the Radar festival, uses live video elements to depict the emotional distance between a husband and wife separated by a political prison. The intense close-ups of the actors’ faces highlight their pain and longing, emphasizing the challenges faced in a surveillance state. Despite some melodramatic moments, the restrained performances by the actors maintain the piece’s grounded nature.

The 7th Voyage of Egon Tichy [Redux], another production at the Fourth Street Theatre, shows the story of a space traveler confronting multiple versions of himself, with Joshua William Gelb’s dynamic performance standing out. While the script may drag in parts, seeing Gelb’s seamless scene changes in person adds an extra layer of excitement to the experience.

On the other hand, PRISONCORE!, part of The Exponential Festival, fails to effectively integrate its story and technology, with its central concept of an online-gaming based prison reform program feeling underdeveloped. The use of AI imagery in the show also adds little value to the overall narrative.

In contrast, TECHNE, a digital project at BAM Fisher, successfully incorporates generative AI in its presentation, creating compelling collisions between technology and storytelling. While some segments, like the AI-generated recreation of Koyaanisqatsi, fall short, others, like Margarita Athanasiou’s video essay exploring mediums and spiritualism, showcase the potential of integrating AI into artistic expression.
