Governor of Kansas suggests allocating an additional $30 million to combat declining water supply • Kansas Reflector

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly addressed the state’s water crisis in her State of the State Address, proposing the creation of a state natural resources office and an additional $30 million each year to tackle the issue. The Governor highlighted the serious concern surrounding the dwindling water supply, particularly in western Kansas where the Ogallala Aquifer has been declining for decades.

Kelly emphasized the need for action to protect the water supply for future generations and proposed the consolidation of water governance under a singular office. She stated that the current system with 14 different agencies governing water in Kansas makes it difficult to align efforts and investments in water conservation.

The Governor’s budget proposal, set to be released, will include the additional funding for water priorities on top of the $35 million authorized by the Kansas Legislature in 2023. Kelly emphasized the importance of long-term planning to ensure that Kansans have the water supply needed to sustain their way of life for generations to come.
