Justice Together advocates for the homeless in Wichita despite restrictions • Kansas Reflector

Wichita City Council recently voted in favor of making it easier for law enforcement to treat homeless individuals as criminals. Despite public opposition and concerns, the council moved forward with changes to city ordinances that allow for the relocation and destruction of belongings of homeless individuals. The changes, considered constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, may not address the root causes of homelessness.

Groups like Justice Together, a coalition of volunteers from religious organizations, have pushed for compassionate solutions to homelessness in Wichita. While some proposed changes were not enacted, others were, leading to concerns about the impact on the homeless population. Justice Together continues to advocate for free bus passes, a budget for a multi-agency center, and a municipal ID program for the homeless.

The group opposes policies that result in the removal of homeless individuals without notice or access to shelter beds. While some restrictions were preserved, Wichita appears to be following a trend of criminalizing homelessness. Justice Together is contemplating their next steps after facing opposition to their advocacy efforts.
