WeRide Inc., a global leader in autonomous driving technology, is partnering with the Canton of Zurich and Swiss national railway Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB) for an autonomous driving pilot project in Switzerland. The project, managed by Swiss Transit Lab (STL), will see two WeRide autonomous cars in operation during the test phase, with plans to expand to four cars in the second quarter. The fully unmanned mode is set to operate for up to five years, with an expansion of the fleet expected in 2026.
Residents in Switzerland’s Furttal Region will be able to book these autonomous vehicles using an app supplied by ioki. WeRide founder and CEO Tony Han highlighted the company’s dedication to expanding autonomous driving solutions in Europe and its adaptability in various scenarios.
This partnership marks WeRide’s third project in Europe within eight months, following the launch of a commercial autonomous minibus project at Zurich Airport and L4 autonomous shuttle services at the 2024 French Open in Paris. The selection of WeRide’s technology for this pilot project reaffirms the versatility of the WeRide One autonomous driving technology platform and its adaptability to different products.
The project aims to provide innovative mobility solutions in Switzerland, especially in suburban areas with limited transportation options. With support from SBB, the Canton of Zurich, and STL, WeRide’s autonomous driving technology will help expand Switzerland’s intelligent transportation network. This collaboration signals a growing interest in WeRide’s technology, products, and services in Europe.
