Susan Toler Carr and her husband Darrell experienced the devastation of losing their home of 25 years in the Los Angeles fires last week. Despite being warned of the destruction, seeing their house burned down brought back the profound grief of losing their son, Justin, who died in 2013. They lost many treasured possessions, including artwork created by Justin and antiques belonging to Susan’s mother, as well as items commemorating Justin’s life. The couple founded a nonprofit in Justin’s memory and found solace in the survival of a gate with the message “Justin Carr Wants World Peace” and a butterfly ornament among the rubble. Darrell made efforts to save their home by climbing onto the roof during the fire and using a hose to spread water. Now, they are trying to raise money to rebuild their lives. Despite the challenges, the Carrs are determined to move forward, finding strength in the support of their friends and the fact that they are still alive. They are grateful for the love and support they have received and are hopeful for the future, knowing that they have the resilience to overcome this adversity.
