South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy is focusing on expanding bilateral cooperation with Israel and Japan in the high-end technology sectors of artificial intelligence and semiconductors. They have been actively working with Israel through the Korea-Israel Industrial R&D Foundation since 2001, with a total annual contribution of $8 million. Currently, the foundation is funding 16 research projects, with plans to add seven more this year.
Director General for Technology Policy Je Kyung-hee recently held a virtual meeting with Alon Stopel, the chief scientist at Israel’s innovation ministry, to review progress in joint research projects. This collaboration is expected to bring mutual benefits, given South Korea’s strength in the manufacturing industry and Israel’s expertise in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and semiconductors.
In addition, Je also met with Jingo Kikukawa, the director general for innovation and environment at Japan’s industry ministry, in Seoul. They discussed ways to enhance technological cooperation with the incoming US administration. Both officials emphasized the importance of adapting to the evolving industrial technology landscape and pledged to identify new areas of cooperation.
The ministry is keen on fostering partnerships with leading innovators in these fields to drive advancements and stay competitive on the global stage. By working together with Israel and Japan, South Korea hopes to leverage their respective strengths and expertise to achieve success in high-end technology sectors.
