Kansas experiences most powerful tornado in recorded history in 2024

In 2024, Kansas experienced a significant increase in severe weather, with 89 tornadoes reported across the state compared to just 39 in the previous year. The most powerful tornado to hit the state was an EF-3 tornado that struck Westmoreland on Apr. 30, resulting in one fatality and the destruction of 22 homes. The victim, Ann Miller, was a longtime resident of Pottawatomie County and had worked at the county health department for 28 years. This tornado outbreak marked the highest total of tornadoes in the state in the past five years, with the second-highest being 68 reported in 2022. Additionally, by the month of May, Kansas had already surpassed the total number of tornadoes reported in all of 2023. In April alone, 37 tornadoes were reported, including the devastating tornado that hit Westmoreland. The community is now working to recover and rebuild in the aftermath of this destructive storm.
