Judge grants permission for release of Jack Smith’s report on Trump election interference case

Federal Judge Aileen Cannon denied a request to extend an injunction prohibiting the Justice Department from releasing a portion of a report issued by former special counsel Jack Smith on President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. The ruling means that the Justice Department could potentially release the section of the report pertaining to Trump’s election interference efforts, barring any future legal action from Trump or his team. The release of the portion of the report about the classified document case is still prohibited, as the Justice Department has no plans to release it at this time. There is a pending motion before the 11th Circuit to release the portion of the report about the Jan. 6 attack, but no ruling has been made yet. Smith resigned from his position recently, and Attorney General Merrick Garland has said he will release the volume of the report related to Trump’s 2020 efforts as soon as legally allowed. The section of the report concerning Trump’s handling of classified documents will remain unreleased due to ongoing charges against two co-defendants. The report is expected to be released just before Trump takes office, and despite facing federal charges related to his election interference attempts, Trump denies any wrongdoing. A hearing is scheduled for Friday to determine if the section of the report about classified documents can be shared with select members of Congress.
