Kansas state lawmakers returned to office on Monday, with Republicans maintaining their super majority after the election. Speaker of the Kansas House, Rep. Dan Hawkins, outlined plans for the upcoming year, including a new budget process that allows lawmakers more time to review the budget before the State of the State address.
Additionally, two new committees have been created to protect the public’s interests. Senate President, Sen. Ty Masterson, established the Committee of Government Efficiency (COGE) to explore ways to reduce spending and increase government efficiency. Speaker Hawkins also announced the creation of a Committee on Government Oversight to address issues that may not align with legislative intent.
While some skeptics have labeled these changes as a power grab, Hawkins insists that the goal is to enhance efficiency in the legislative process. Both Republican and Democratic leaders, including Kansas House Minority Leader Rep. Brandon Woodard, will be discussing their priorities and plans for the legislative session in upcoming live reports.
