The Smith County Master Gardeners are kicking off their 2025 Master Gardeners at the Library lecture series with a presentation by horticulturist Dr. Andrew King on January 17th. The lecture, titled “Hot New Plants for East Texas… and Some Others We’ve Forgotten About,” will explore new plant introductions specifically adapted for the region’s climate and soils.

Dr. King, an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center in Overton, will provide insights on plants that thrive in East Texas, offering practical ideas for gardeners. The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Taylor Auditorium of the Tyler Public Library.

The Smith County Master Gardeners’ 2025 Library Series will continue monthly with presentations on various gardening and environmental topics, including tree stress management, beekeeping fundamentals, gardening for butterfly caterpillars, and preserving oak savannas.

The series aims to empower the community to garden successfully and sustainably, providing educational opportunities for gardeners to learn from experts and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Future lectures include Urban Forester Luke Alfaro discussing “Urban Tree Stress” in February and Dr. Garett Slater presenting “Getting Started with Bees: The Fundamentals of Beekeeping” in March.
