Vice President-elect JD Vance stated that peaceful protesters from the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol should be pardoned, while those who committed violence should not. This is contrary to former President Donald Trump’s plan to pardon all rioters on his first day in office. Trump believes that rioters who pleaded guilty to violent crimes were coerced by a corrupt system and should also be pardoned. Vance clarified his stance by saying that each case would be evaluated individually, including those who were provoked into violence. Since Jan. 6, over 1,270 individuals have been convicted in connection with the Capitol riot, with more than 1,580 arrests made. Vance emphasized that he and the president-elect are committed to ensuring the equal administration of the law and addressing any instances of unjust imprisonment. The Trump transition team did not respond to NBC News’ request for comment on the matter.
