California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s response to the California wildfires during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” expressing frustration with the spread of misinformation. Trump had made baseless claims on his new social media platform, Truth Social, accusing Newsom of blocking water restoration measures that would have helped with the fires.
Trump also falsely claimed that money had been drained from FEMA, blaming President Joe Biden for leaving him without necessary resources. Newsom, however, extended an invitation to Trump to visit California and witness the devastation firsthand, but had not received a response.
Newsom expressed concern that Trump may follow through on his threats to withhold disaster aid from California after his inauguration, citing past instances where Trump has targeted states with leaders he was in disagreements with. The governor noted that this tactic could delay the much-needed federal assistance for California’s wildfire recovery efforts.
Despite the challenges presented by Trump’s rhetoric, Newsom remains focused on supporting those affected by the fires, thanking the firefighters and first responders who are working tirelessly to contain the blazes. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and support from the federal government to aid in the state’s recovery efforts.
