Central Yemen Gas Station Explosion and Fire Claims 15 Lives

In central Yemen, at least 15 people were killed and 67 others injured in a massive fire caused by an explosion at a gas station in the Zaher district of Bayda province. The Houthi rebel-run Health Ministry reported that 40 of the injured were in critical condition, with rescue teams searching for missing individuals. The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

The province of Bayda is controlled by Houthi rebels who have been in conflict with Yemen’s internationally recognized government for over a decade. Last week, the rebels attacked and looted the Hanaka al-Masoud village in the al-Qurayshiya district, resulting in fatalities and casualties. The attack included the detention of men and the looting of homes, with continued shelling by the Houthis over five days.

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen condemned the attack, highlighting the suffering and injustice inflicted on innocent Yemenis by the Houthi terrorists. Yemen’s civil war, which began in 2014, has caused more than 150,000 deaths and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The conflict involves the Houthi rebels, the internationally recognized government, and a Saudi-led coalition backed by the U.S. in an attempt to restore stability. The war has since turned into a stalemate, with devastating consequences for the Yemeni people.
