In a recent development in the case of the Olathe East High School shooting, Jaylon Elmore has changed his plea to guilty of attempted premeditated first-degree murder and convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Elmore initially pleaded not guilty to attempted capital murder last year after shooting at a school resource officer on March 4, 2022. The incident also injured the school’s assistant principal, Kaleb Stoppel. Stoppel, who is now a financial advisor, attended the plea hearing and expressed his desire for Elmore to have a second chance while also acknowledging the consequences of his actions. Elmore, his attorney, and the prosecutor have agreed to a 20-year sentence, with Elmore expressing remorse for his actions. Elmore suffered significant injuries during the shooting, and a case review concluded that the school resource officer acted appropriately in the incident. The shooting occurred when Stoppel and the officer confronted Elmore about a report of a gun in his backpack, leading to a brief and intense exchange of gunfire.
