A man named Jesse James Flaugher has been sentenced to nearly 21 years in prison for shooting a Kansas City, Kansas Police officer in December of 2020. Flaugher was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and firearm possession by a felon, with the charges ordered to run consecutively.
The shooting took place near W. 47th and Conser streets in Overland Park following a hit-and-run in Wyandotte County. Witnesses reported that Flaugher shot at the police officer after pulling into a yard on a cul-de-sac, then fled the scene. He was later arrested in Miami County and found guilty by a Johnson County jury in October 2024.
Fortunately, the officer was wearing safety equipment that likely saved his life, as he was hit in the arm but a bullet also struck his bulletproof vest. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face while on duty.
