Board members resign amid growing concerns of euthanasia at KC Pet Project

Former executives from Kansas City’s municipal animal shelter, KC Pet Project, have expressed concerns over potential changes in euthanasia policies under new leadership. The shelter, known for promoting itself as a no-kill facility, saw the departure of former COO Chad Ackerman and CEO Teresa Johnson in December.

Ackerman took to social media to voice worries that new leadership may revert to euthanizing more animals to save money, contrary to the organization’s mission of saving homeless pets. Three out of five board members have left their positions in the past month, with concerns raised about transparency in leadership.

In response to these concerns, KC Pet Project’s interim leader, Steve Kaufman, stated that euthanasia policies have not changed under new leadership and emphasized the organization’s commitment to transparency. The city of Kansas City continues to support KC Pet Project amidst the uncertainty.

Despite the concerns raised, sources close to the shelter believe that the organization and its mission are in good hands. The interim CEO has reassured the public that no changes to euthanasia policies have been made.
