Jackson County in Missouri is facing scrutiny after one of its employees, 61-year-old Everett Carter, tragically died on the job over the weekend. County Administrator Troy Schulte has placed blame on Carter for his own death, stating that it is county policy to “tow it out” in case of doubt when trying to handle a situation. However, County Executive Frank White seems less sure, stating that in his 10 years in Jackson County, the policy has always been the same and there is no need for change, even in light of Carter’s passing.
There is confusion surrounding whether Carter was directed by leadership to tow the vehicle that ultimately caused his death. Inter City Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Jewell revealed that Carter believed the county was being cheap which led to his decision to tow the truck. Despite this, both White and Schulte do not believe an internal investigation by the county is necessary, relying on the investigation being conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Carter’s services are scheduled for January 11, and Schulte is set to leave the county on January 17. The incident has sparked questions about accountability and employee safety protocols within the county.
