Kansas City man Eric Lee Peterson, who pleaded guilty to entering the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, has been granted permission by a federal judge to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025. The judge also allowed Peterson to expand his local travel restrictions while on bond. Peterson’s attorney argued that his client deserved these exceptions since he has no criminal record and only entered the Capitol for a brief period without proper authorization.
Trump has promised to pardon Jan. 6 defendants on his first day in office, calling them “patriots” and “warriors.” Peterson faces up to one year in prison for his actions and has agreed to pay $500 in restitution toward the damages to the Capitol. He is among the nearly 1,000 defendants who have pleaded guilty to charges related to the attack on the Capitol that disrupted the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory. Peterson was seen on surveillance and third-party videos entering the Capitol and taking photos inside before exiting the building.
