Migrant Murdered at 21, Body Parts Harvested as Family Fights for Return

Aurimar Iturriago Villegas, a young woman from Venezuela, traveled to the U.S. in hopes of finding work and helping her family escape poverty. Tragically, she was shot and killed in a road rage incident near Dallas, Texas. Without her family’s knowledge, county authorities donated her body to a local medical school, where it was dissected and assigned dollar values to different parts. Her remains were cremated and buried in a cemetery, unbeknownst to her grieving mother back in Venezuela. The practice of using unclaimed bodies for medical research and training, while legal, is widely viewed as unethical due to the lack of consent and the impact on surviving family members.

Aurimar was one of about 2,350 unclaimed bodies sent to the University of North Texas Health Science Center, where they were used for research, student training, and leased out to medical technology companies. Concerns have been raised about the mistreatment of vulnerable individuals and the disregard for their families’ wishes in these situations. As a result of investigative reporting, the Health Science Center suspended its body donation program, fired officials, and pledged to stop using unclaimed bodies.

Families of other individuals whose bodies were donated without consent have also come forward, echoing Arelis Coromoto Villegas’ pain and frustration. Communication breakdowns and bureaucratic failures have complicated the process for families trying to reclaim their loved ones’ bodies. For Arelis, the journey to reclaim Aurimar’s remains has been fraught with challenges, leaving her unable to fully mourn her daughter’s death. The case highlights the ethical concerns surrounding the use of unclaimed bodies for medical research and the need for greater transparency and communication with families in these situations.
