Two pilots were killed in a small plane crash near Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu on Tuesday afternoon. The Kamaka Air Cessna 208 was on a training flight when it crashed into an abandoned building owned by the Department of Transportation. The pilots managed to avoid hitting other structures, including a fuel farm. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying low before hearing a loud boom and seeing plumes of smoke. The firefighters were able to contain the fire to the exterior of the building, and the airport remained operational. Kamaka Air confirmed the loss of two crew members in the accident. The names of the pilots have not been disclosed.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green extended his condolences to the families of the victims and promised support for the investigation. The building that was hit in the crash was already scheduled for demolition. The cause of the crash may take some time to determine. Ualena and Aolele Streets near the crash site remain closed.
