Michigan man confesses to plotting mass shooting targeting LGBTQ community

Michigan man Mack Davis, 22, pleaded guilty to planning a mass shooting at a local political party’s headquarters and a nearby bar in Owosso, Michigan because of his hatred towards gay people. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for committing a hate crime. Davis had researched mass killers and amassed an arsenal of weapons for the planned attack. He also posted anti-gay messages on social media and vandalized his neighbor’s car. Police arrested him in June after he test-fired his firearm at his neighbor’s properties. Davis has remained in custody since his arrest. His attorney described him as young and vulnerable, stating he did not intentionally harm anyone despite planning the attack. Hate crimes against the LGBTQI+ community are not tolerated, and Davis’ plans were described as chilling by the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. The case highlights the ongoing issue of mass shootings at gay bars, with two high-profile incidents occurring in Florida in 2016 and Colorado in 2020. The shooter in the Colorado incident was sentenced to life in prison, and lawsuits have been filed alleging the shooting could have been prevented with the enforcement of red flag laws. Davis is scheduled to be sentenced for the foiled attack at a later date.
