An Independence family is grateful to be safe after a fire destroyed their home while they were out to dinner. Yezenia and Edgar Leyva received a call from a relative informing them of the fire, which rekindled after being put out by fire crews. The second blaze destroyed the upper level of the house and caused the roof to cave in. The family lost everything, including valuable tools that were stolen from the garage in the aftermath of the fire. They suspect that their home became a target after pictures were posted on social media. Despite the tragedy, the Leyva family is staying positive and focusing on the fact that everyone is safe. They have set up a GoFundMe to help replace some of their lost possessions. The community has shown support, with others sharing similar experiences of post-fire theft. The family of seven is currently staying at a hotel as they figure out their next steps.
