Former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb expressed concerns about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s potential appointment as health secretary under President-elect Donald Trump. Gottlieb warned that Kennedy’s vaccine skepticism could lead to a decrease in vaccination rates for diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella, potentially causing large outbreaks and even deaths. Kennedy has a history of spreading misinformation about vaccines, including false claims linking the MMR vaccine to autism. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence disproving these claims, Kennedy has continued to cast doubt on the safety and efficacy of vaccines, even calling the COVID-19 vaccine “the deadliest vaccine ever made” during a meeting with state legislators in Louisiana. Gottlieb also pointed out that Kennedy’s controversial views on abortion and potential impact on food prices may further complicate his confirmation process. While Kennedy has stated that he believes in giving people a choice when it comes to vaccines, Gottlieb emphasized that Kennedy’s intentions and policy decisions could have serious consequences for public health. Gottlieb also noted that President Trump may not share Kennedy’s beliefs about vaccines and would likely not want to see a resurgence of preventable diseases in the U.S. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to Gottlieb’s remarks.
