The Department for Enterprise has rescheduled the annual STEMFest event for primary school children to March after it was postponed due to bus driver shortages. The event, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, and maths, will now take place on 26 and 27 March at the Villa Marina. Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston stated that the new date allows sufficient time to arrange logistical and industry support.
STEMFest, which was first held in 2018, aims to spark students’ interest in STEM subjects by showcasing exhibits from various organisations. Johnston emphasized the importance of nurturing a love for STEM subjects early on in students to shape future innovators and problem solvers.
The event had to be postponed last month due to challenges in organizing bus transport for about 800 pupils from Year 4 and 5. Johnston noted that transporting pupils from all primary schools was a challenge amid the pressure on bus services at the time. However, the department is ensuring that no year group misses out on attending the event, which is a highlight in each school’s learning calendar.
Primary schools across the island have been informed of the new date, with the majority confirming their participation. The department’s goal is to inspire and engage students in STEM subjects to help develop the skills needed for the future.
