The Independence Police Department released body camera footage and context surrounding a deadly police shooting that occurred earlier this month. The incident involved the shooting and killing of Maria Pike, 34, and her 11-week-old baby, Destinii Hope. The released video shows police responding to a domestic assault where Pike was holding the infant in a closet. After 11 minutes of attempting to persuade her to release the baby, Pike pulled out a knife and lunged at officers, resulting in the fatal shooting of both Pike and the baby. Pike’s twin sister criticized the officers for not exploring other options and questioned the outcome. The full unedited video is now in the hands of an investigative team for review.
The release of the edited video on Thanksgiving Eve without warning to the family drew criticism from the KC Law Enforcement Accountability Project, calling it disrespectful and inhumane. The organization called for a transparent investigation, policy review, and accountability for the deaths of Maria and baby Destinii. The Independence Police Department expressed sadness over the tragic incident and asked for patience as the investigation continues.
