Kari Newell, the woman who triggered a police raid on a small Kansas City newspaper resulting in the death of its elderly owner, Joan Meyer, is leaving town. Newell, the owner of Kari’s Kitchen, is closing the restaurant following a dispute with Marion County Record over information obtained about her past DUI offense. She has denied blaming the newspaper for Meyer’s death. Newell also cited complications from her divorce as a reason for closing the cafĂ©.
The controversy began when Newell accused the newspaper of illegally obtaining her DUI information, leading to a police raid on the newspaper’s offices and Meyer’s home. The raid was led by Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody, who was also being investigated by the newspaper for sexual assault allegations. Before her death, Meyer expressed outrage at the raid, comparing it to “Hitler tactics.”
The newspaper’s owner, Eric Meyer, revealed that the police seized their computer servers, possibly due to the investigation into Cody’s alleged sexual misconduct. Numerous anonymous sources had contacted the newspaper with claims against Cody, but the story was never published due to lack of concrete evidence. The newspaper has since faced scrutiny and criticism for the raid and the impact it had on Joan Meyer’s final days. Cody has not publicly addressed the allegations against him.
