Woman confesses to killing man who was locked in trunk and stabbed with machete.

Kendra Panteah, a 37-year-old woman, pleaded guilty to kidnapping a man in New Mexico in July 2019. The man, identified as John Doe, was locked in a trunk and fatally stabbed by another man, Gilbert John Jr., when he tried to escape. Panteah did not kill or stab the victim, but she was involved in the crime. Panteah and John had been using drugs, including methamphetamine, before the incident. After the killing, John drove the victim’s car with the body in it to a remote location and set it on fire to cover up the crime.

According to Panteah’s plea agreement, she was driving with others in the victim’s car when he was put in the trunk after a confrontation. She asked John for help and they drove to a remote location, where the victim broke out of the trunk and John stabbed him with a machete. Panteah stated that John wanted her to stab the victim as well, but she refused. After the victim stopped moving, they sat on the trunk of the car.

Panteah faces at least 10 years in prison and potentially up to 18 years when she is sentenced in January. Her attorney emphasized that substance abuse played a significant role in the tragic events and called attention to the substance and alcohol abuse issues that many Native American communities face. Panteah and John, who is Navajo, both acknowledged their tribal affiliations in their plea agreements.
