Will Democrats’ reliance on celebrity star power make a difference in the end?

In the final week of the 2024 campaign, Democrats are leveraging their star power advantage by enlisting celebrities like Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé to endorse Kamala Harris and energize voters. Harris’s rallies have featured performances by Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, and more, drawing enthusiastic crowds. The goal is to increase voter turnout and enthusiasm for the Democratic ticket.

In contrast, Donald Trump’s celebrity supporters include Kid Rock, Waka Flocka Flame, and Hulk Hogan, who appeal to his core base of voters. While Trump often provides star power at his events, his campaign lacks the star-studded lineup seen at Harris’s rallies. Trump’s events have faced criticism, such as comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s controversial remarks about Puerto Rico, prompting support for Harris from Puerto Rican celebrities like Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez.

Harris’s campaign is hosting the “When We Vote We Win” concert series to encourage early voting in key battleground states. Future events will feature performances by Mumford & Sons, Los Tigres del Norte, and Maná, among others. In contrast, Trump’s events have been less celebrity-focused, with some athletes and country singers making appearances.

While celebrity endorsements can generate excitement and draw crowds, they can also distract from a candidate’s message. Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, which featured performances by Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Jay Z, ultimately faltered in key swing states, highlighting the potential pitfalls of relying too heavily on star power. As the 2024 election nears its conclusion, both candidates are ramping up their efforts to secure votes, with Democrats banking on the appeal of their celebrity supporters to help carry them to victory.
