Officer Daniel Hodges, who fought off the pro-Trump mob during the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, attended Kamala Harris’ rally at the Ellipse near the White House where Trump had urged his supporters to “fight like hell.” Hodges, who was glad Harris chose to host a rally at the same spot, spoke about the significance of moving forward from the events of Jan. 6. He also mentioned that the atmosphere at Harris’ rally was much less eventful compared to the chaos he experienced on Jan. 6. Additionally, Harris referenced the officers who were injured during the attack, including Brian Sicknick, whose brother spoke at the rally about the consequences of Trump’s incitement of violence. Another former Capitol Police officer, Aquilino Gonell, who was assaulted during the attack, also attended the rally and expressed emotional reactions to the speeches. Gonell, who has campaigned for Harris, emphasized the importance of rejecting political violence and holding Trump accountable for his actions on Jan. 6. As a military veteran and immigrant, Gonell highlighted the importance of being hopeful and optimistic about the future, in contrast to the chaos and hate incited by Trump.
