Controversy Surrounds Jackson County Prosecutor’s Race with Allegations of Dark Money and Dirty Politics

A newly formed political action committee, Stop Gun Violence Now, is under scrutiny for allegedly supporting one candidate, John Gromowsky, by backing another candidate, Stephanie Burton. Melesa Johnson, the third candidate in the race, believes this is an attempt to split the Black vote. The PAC has spent over $333,000, mainly supporting Gromowsky and some funds towards Burton with negative ads against Johnson.

The PAC, led by Louis Accurso and Kevin Regan, was recently formed and has undisclosed sources of funding, with Evergy contributing $25,000. Political experts suggest that while using a PAC to boost a preferred candidate is not uncommon, the amount of money and timing of donations raise questions about transparency.

Former officials and community leaders have raised concerns about the tactics being used in the race, with many questioning the motives behind the large financial support for Gromowsky. Johnson has been vocal about the issue, urging voters to be cautious and do their own research on the candidates.

Despite the controversy, Gromowsky has stated that his campaign aims to earn the votes of all Jackson County voters based on his experience and qualifications. Burton has remained silent on the issue, ignoring calls and messages from the media.

Political experts advise voters to be skeptical of campaign advertising and to gather information from reliable sources about the candidates. The lack of transparency and potential manipulation of the election process by outside funding sources has raised concerns among residents and officials in Jackson County.
