Comedian Jay Johnston from ‘Anchorman’ and ‘Mr. Show’ sentenced for involvement in Jan. 6 Capitol attack

Actor Jay Johnston was sentenced to 12 months and a day in federal prison for his involvement in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Johnston pleaded guilty to obstructing officers during a civil disorder. Prosecutors sought 18 months in prison for Johnston, highlighting a photo of him dressed as the “QAnon Shaman” at a Halloween party in 2022. Johnston spent time in the Capitol tunnel on January 6, participating in violent activities against police officers. Despite his involvement, Johnston downplayed the events and blamed the media and police.

Johnston’s lawyer argued that his Hollywood status was being used against him in the case. Since the Capitol attack, Johnston has been blacklisted in Hollywood and has worked as a handyman instead of pursuing his acting career. He participated in events leading up to the attack, including attending a rally with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and filming himself at the Capitol on January 6.

Johnston was involved in violent acts against police officers during the attack, including pushing against a police line in the lower west tunnel. He joked during the attack and participated in aggressive actions against law enforcement. Over 1,500 people have been arrested in connection with the Capitol attack, with over 1,100 convictions and sentences ranging from a few days to 22 years in federal prison for some individuals. Johnston is among those who have faced legal repercussions for his role in the Capitol attack.
