Kentucky state Senator Johnnie Turner, a strong supporter of the coal industry and other causes in his Appalachian district, has passed away at the age of 76. Turner, a Harlan Republican, was known for his dedication to his constituents and his unwavering commitment to the people of eastern Kentucky. He passed away after a tragic accident at home where he fell into an empty swimming pool while riding a lawn mower.
Turner’s colleagues remember him as a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly to support initiatives beneficial to his district and the entire state. Despite his strong support for the coal industry, Turner also championed measures such as a high-stakes horse racing bill, demonstrating his willingness to advocate for industries beyond his own. He served in the Kentucky House before winning election to the Senate in 2020.
With Turner’s passing so close to the election, his name will still appear on the ballot for the upcoming general election, with a lone independent candidate recently withdrawing from the race. Write-in candidates have until Friday to file for the seat, or a special election will be needed to fill the vacant position in the legislature.
Turner’s legacy as a passionate voice for eastern Kentucky and tireless advocate for his constituents will live on, with his impact on the state legislature and his commitment to serving the people of Kentucky remembered by those who worked alongside him.
