McDonald’s Investigates Onions as Potential Source of Deadly E. coli Outbreak

An E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has resulted in at least one death and nearly 50 reported cases of illness. The outbreak is believed to be caused by slivered onions served on the hamburgers. The onions, sourced from a single supplier, are sliced and packaged as raw vegetables before being sent to restaurants. McDonald’s has removed the implicated onions and beef patties from its menu in affected areas. The outbreak strain, O157:H7, produces a harmful toxin that can damage the small intestine. This is the first time this strain has been linked to an outbreak involving raw onions, according to the CDC. The majority of cases are in Colorado, with one death reported in Mesa County. Investigations by health agencies are ongoing to identify the exact source of contamination and prevent further cases. The Food Safety and Inspection Service is working with the FDA and CDC on the investigation. Symptoms of E. coli infection can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. It can lead to life-threatening conditions such as hemolytic uremic syndrome. The FDA has not identified a specific farm or supplier of the onions but is focusing on one supplier serving three distribution centers. The investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected to emerge as the situation develops.
