Seven people are believed dead after a gangway on a ferry dock collapsed on Sapelo Island, Georgia, during a Gullah Geechee culture celebration event. At least 20 people went into the water when the structure gave way, prompting a response from the U.S. Coast Guard and state and local agencies. The number and extent of injuries are unknown, and the Coast Guard is still actively searching for survivors. A reunification center has been set up for families of those impacted by the tragedy. President Joe Biden has pledged federal resources to aid those affected. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and his family expressed their condolences and asked for prayers for those lost, injured, and still in harm’s way. Sapelo Island, located 72 miles south of Savannah, is home to a centuries-old Gullah Geechee culture maintained by descendants of West and Central African slaves. The incident is currently under investigation, and efforts are being made to secure the gangway. The Sapelo Island community has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and asks for continued prayers for those affected by the tragic event.
