Trade wars would have a detrimental impact on farmers • Kansas Reflector

A recent study released by the National Corn Growers Association and the American Soybean Association showed that a tariff-induced trade war with China would have devastating effects on U.S. farmers. The study projected significant declines in soybean and corn exports to China, potentially causing billions of dollars in losses for farmers.

During a webinar in response to the study, agricultural representatives urged farmers and rural voters not to vote for former President Trump due to his proposed tariffs. The study warned that reinstating tariffs could lead to immediate drops in exports, which would be filled by exports from Argentina and Brazil.

The webinar participants spoke about the negative impact of the 2018 trade war on farmers and rural economies, with many still recovering from the effects. The former administration provided relief to farmers who suffered losses due to high tariffs.

Despite this, the Trump campaign highlighted various policies aimed at boosting agricultural trade and rural economies, including trade agreements initiated during Trump’s term. In response, a spokesperson for the campaign criticized climate-related policies from the Biden-Harris campaign for potentially harming farm communities.

Many of the webinar participants expressed support for Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, citing their understanding of agriculture issues. In the face of potential trade threats, farmers are looking for political leaders who will prioritize their interests and uphold fair trade agreements.
