“The most evil person,” says Trump of judge overseeing Jan. 6 case

Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized the judge handling his Jan. 6-related federal criminal case, calling her “the most evil person” and special counsel Jack Smith “a sick puppy.” Trump was upset about the release of redacted documents by the judge, which he called “election interference.” The documents included information from the House Jan. 6 Committee, leading Trump to accuse the judge of being biased against him. Trump has faced multiple charges in the case and pleaded not guilty.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, who Trump accuses of being biased against him, has faced threats from his supporters. A Texas woman was arrested last year for threatening Chutkan’s life, and Chutkan has been a victim of a “swatting” call. Despite these threats, Chutkan has continued to preside over the case without bias. Trump’s team has engaged in delay tactics and argued for presidential immunity, resulting in the case being postponed until after the 2024 election. However, Smith’s team has maintained that Trump bore responsibility for the Jan. 6 attack.

Chutkan’s decision to unseal redacted documents upset Trump, who criticized her timing, just weeks before the election. The ongoing legal battle centers around Trump’s spread of false election fraud claims and his alleged knowledge of their falsehood. Chutkan denied most of Trump’s requests for additional discovery, highlighting the strained nature of his defense arguments. Despite Trump’s accusations and criticisms, Chutkan remains committed to overseeing a fair trial in the case.
