Temwa Chawinga of the Kansas City Current made history on Saturday night by breaking the National Women’s Soccer League single-season goal-scoring record with her 19th goal of the year in a 1-0 win over Bay FC. This goal, scored in the 35th minute, surpassed the previous record of 18 goals set by Sam Kerr in 2019. The Current also became the fourth team to score 50 goals in a season. Bay FC, currently in the eighth and final playoff spot, has two games left in the season.
In other NWSL action, the North Carolina Courage and Angel City played to a 1-1 draw with goals from Christen Press and Olivia Wingate in stoppage time. This marked Press’s first goal since 2020 after recovering from an ACL injury. The Courage extended their home unbeaten streak to 21 matches with this result.
Gotham also secured a 2-0 road win against the Chicago Red Stars with a late penalty goal from Lynn Williams and a goal in stoppage time from Esther González. This win guarantees Gotham at least one home playoff game and moves them into second place in the standings.
These results show the intense competition in the NWSL as teams make their final push for playoff positioning. Chawinga’s record-breaking performance, Press’s return to goal-scoring form, and Gotham’s climb up the standings highlight the excitement in the league.
