Deb Sanning, the deputy regional administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, emphasized the need for more public education on the future of pilot-less flights during a speech at the Kansas Aviation Summit in Salina. She highlighted the increasing use of uncrewed flights and drones in the aviation industry, as more companies invest in electric propulsion systems and autonomous programs.
At the summit, Textron eAviation president and CEO Kriya Shortt announced plans to conduct flight testing of the new electric vertical takeoff and landing system, eVTOL, at Salina Regional Airport. This system will utilize an electric-powered aircraft called Nexus for cargo and passenger transport.
Pieter Miller, executive director of Salina Airport Authority, expressed excitement about supporting the Textron project, as partnership with K-State Salina and the National Institute for Aviation Research allows for flight testing and development by industry professionals.
Sanning also emphasized the importance of community engagement and outreach regarding drone activity, citing concerns from people about drones flying over their property and fears of surveillance. She explained the need for communication and education as drones become more common in the airspace.
Overall, Sanning emphasized the FAA’s efforts to incorporate emerging technologies into regulatory policies while acknowledging the challenges and concerns that come with the changing landscape of the aviation industry.
