A new coalition, KC United for Public Safety, comprised of various organizations, including the city, KCPD, and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, announced at a news conference their ambitious goal to reduce homicides in Kansas City to under 100 for the year. The announcement came in the wake of a shooting in Westport that left five individuals hospitalized. The coalition’s objectives also include reducing gun violence by 50% within five years and making a measurable economic impact on the city.
KC Common Good CEO Klassie Alcine emphasized the importance of collective effort in addressing the issue of violence and its impact on the community. UMKC Assistant Professor Marijana Kotlaja highlighted the financial costs associated with each homicide, which can have repercussions on businesses, job opportunities, and retail industries in the affected areas.
During the news conference, KCPD Chief Stacey Graves outlined the department’s efforts to collaborate with business owners to enhance patrols and address crime concerns. Community Interaction Officers are stationed across six different divisions to engage with businesses and residents about specific crime issues.
Overall, the coalition’s proactive approach, partnerships, and community engagement aim to not only reduce crime rates and prevent violence but also create a safer and more welcoming environment for businesses and residents in Kansas City. The team is dedicated to working collaboratively towards achieving these crucial public safety goals.
