A man named James Provost was attacked and killed by several pit bull mixed dogs in a backyard in Albany, New York. The incident occurred when up to nine dogs brutally and viciously attacked him. One of the dogs was shot and killed by an officer, causing the others to disperse. The homeowner, who was different from the caretaker of the dogs, did not live at the residence. Investigators found 24 pit bulls at the home, some of which were puppies, and they were taken by the humane society. It was unclear why there were so many dogs at the residence, and it was not known how they got into the neighboring yard. In May, a search warrant had been executed at the home for suspected drug activity, and some dogs were turned over to the humane society at that time. Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins stated that they were working with the district attorney’s office to determine what criminal charges, if any, were applicable in this case. The fate of the remaining dogs, some of which were unlicensed, would be decided by another authority, who would determine whether they should be released or euthanized.
