Topeka, KS – Governor Laura Kelly’s political action committee, Middle of the Road PAC, has endorsed around 80 Democratic candidates for the House and Senate in an effort to break the GOP’s veto-proof supermajorities in both chambers. The PAC, which raised $1 million, selected candidates that they believe are “moderate, middle-of-the-road leaders” focused on improving the lives of Kansans through common-sense policies.
Governor Kelly emphasized the importance of putting aside partisan politics to serve Kansas families and endorsed candidates who she believes are qualified to do so. However, House Majority Leader Chris Croft, a Republican, criticized the endorsements, saying that they showed a Democratic Party out of touch with mainstream Kansans and incapable of addressing federal tax and economic issues.
Republican Rep. Avery Anderson accused the endorsed Democratic candidates of being “super liberals” who support policies like the Green New Deal, expansion of Medicare eligibility, and defunding the police. The House GOP plans to release negative information about Democratic candidates closer to the November 5th election.
The outcome of the legislative races will determine whether Governor Kelly can break the Republican supermajorities, allowing her more influence in her final two years in office. The deadline to register to vote in the November general election is October 15th, with advance voting starting on October 16th. In-person advance voting ends at noon on November 4th, and the final day to request a mail ballot is October 29th.
